In our latest retail news, Argos goes ahead becoming the first UK retailer to launch ‘voice shopping’ service via the Google Assistant.
Customers can now ask their Google Home smart device to reserve items and check availability in their local store.
This is faced with big competition from the online retail giant Amazon which also have their own-brand Echo smart devices.
Even though Amazon has sold millions of Echo smart devices, analysts say that only a fraction of people use them to buy products.
Additionally, Argos has sold thousands of devices powered by Amazon’s Alexa voice technology, but it does not have a voice app on the Alexa platform.
Argos’s CEO John Rogers says
“Voice technology has the potential to revolutionise how we shop in the future. Digital home assistants have increased in popularity over the past year and people are increasingly looking to their smart devices to help with the smooth running of their lives”
Argos has seen this growth with sales of smart speakers increasing 151 per cent year-on-year.
