We are pleased to annouce the arrival of the first McCarthy baby! Jenny gave birth to Ruby Rose in October this year. Jenny now lives in Cornwall with her husband Hadley but will be returning to McCarthy as a remote recruitment consultant in March 2008.

Net-a-Porter launches review

Internet entrepreneur Natalie Massenet is understood to be conducting a review of her fashion e-tail business Net-a-Porter.com.

Massenet is reportedly keen to secure a new investor for Net-a-Porter.com, which analysts believe could be worth up to £250 million if it were put up for sale. Massenet invested just £850,000 eight years ago.

Massenet is believed to have drafted in an investment bank to advise on options to expand Net-a-Porter.com. It is unclear whether Massenet or the business's shareholders would favour a sale option.

According to newspaper reports, shareholders in Net-a-Porter include French luxury group Richemont and Venezuelan investor Baywinds, each of which have 28 per cent. Massenet is believed to have a 17 per cent stake in the company.

Last year, Net-a-Porter.com said it was adding by 3,000 customers a month, with an average order value of £500.

Waitrose to target market towns with smaller format

Waitrose is to launch a market-town format next week as it considers setting up a convenience store chain.

Next week, the John Lewis Partnership-owned chain will open its first market-town store in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. The shop is a remodelling of an existing outlet.

The 13,000 sq ft St Neots store will offer a higher proportion of fresh food – 50 per cent of space compared to 39 per cent in a standard Waitrose – and a 200 per cent increase in locally sourced produce. Fresh and frozen options will also be located next to each other in the new-look outlet.

Waitrose will open a further market-town store, acquired from Budgens, in Buckingham in June and another, purchased from the Co-op, in Brackley, Northamptonshire, in July.

Waitrose managing director Mark Price said: "Our brand has traditionally operated most successfully at around 20,000 sq ft, but in an increasingly competitive marketplace the challenge was to develop the potential of smaller shops in our estate. The market-town format will allow us to achieve that.

Upmarket furniture retailer New Heights has shut all its stores, as speculation mounts about the future of the company.

New Heights, founded in 1999 by three Oxford graduates, has 20 stores in locations such as Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Reading and Nottingham.

New Heights bought MFI's Sofa Workshop for £1.8 million in October 2006, which has 34 stores. The two fascias trade separately and all Sofa Workshop stores remain open.

New Heights is understood to have suffered from the flagging furniture sector. Its stores ceased trading on Friday and it is unclear whether the retailer will open them again.

Earlier this year, beds specialist Sleep Depot went into administration and both Land of Leather and ScS Upholstery have issued profit warnings recently.

A New Heights spokeswoman declined to comment.

There was no answer on the telephone at New Heights' head office or any of the retailer's stores when Retail Week contacted them today.
